Every opportunity I have to speak to a group of young people, I jump at it. It is a privilege and an
honor to travel the country and share my stories and experiences as an author. I never would have
dreamed in a million years that something I've created would be sold all over the world, and that
people would want "me" to put my pitiful, chicken scratch of an autograph in their book. The thought of
that is just crazy!
I set out to inspire children with my characters and books, but I am the one that
continues to be inspired by the energy, positive words, kindness, and creativity of every single person
I've met while on this journey. I look forward to traveling wherever I am called, or wherever God
leads me, and making connections that will last a lifetime.
through the year. So feel free to contact anyone posted below to get a feel of my presentation style:
"Mr. Barnes visited Morgan County Primary School and energized our students with his love of reading and writing. His presentation was geared to the level of our students. The Ruby and The Booker Boys series is a hit at our school! These books stay in circulation and rarely make it back to the shelf.
Teachers and students are still talking about Mr. Barnes’ visit!"

"Our students are still talking about Derrick Barnes' visit. Thanks to Mr. Barnes, they were reminded that its FUN to create a world of different characters and situations. It was great to hear just how much he enjoys life as a writer. Mr. Barnes' enthusiasm for writing is contagious, and he does a great job of sharing his obvious enjoyment of his craft with students. Mr. Barnes also reminded our youngsters that even an established writer such as himself rarely gets it right the first time; revising and editing are important steps in the writing process. Students sometimes need to hear this from someone else besides their teachers, and Derrick Barnes provided the perfect voice of credibility as a writing role-model."
